experiment: nighttime photography

Hey folks, yesterday I went out to just test out some strobist techniques – all in all a very short shoot but I wanted to share the pictures with you anyway. Let me know what you think.

Camera was set to ISO 100, got my new 85mm f1.4 on and shot at f2 with 1/6 of a second.

Hey guys – today I want to bring this picture to your attention as it’s supposed to be the start of a little “street portraiture” project that I want to do the next couple of months. I don’t intend to commit to one picture each day – we’ll see how many will come up in the end. For each picture I’ll state the shoot-info meaning details about camera, lens and exposure.

I’ll post them on my Flickr account and probably some of them here on my blog – so stay tuned.

That night was a special night. Not only was it the finals of Germany’s Next Topmodel by gorgeous Heidi, but also was it the night where the wether forecast DID NOT announce a thunderstorm!

We went out to take some night portraits and found that gorgeous old train parked beside the former db headquarters in frankfurt. Setup can be seen in the 3rd picture. This was the first time I tried this using just one speedlight and my new California Sunbounce Micro Mini Zebra with DIY flash bracket ;-) That night I know what the pros ment when saying china remote flash triggers are crap. I used to own several of those but as they kind of fired when they liked but not when I needed them to I decided to get rid of them and order a set of Paul C. Buff’s Alienbee Cybersyncs and voilá – they just perform!

But back to the story: we started shooting and some guys in a car decided to be bored and watched all the time parked right behind us – that was until – all of a sudden – it began to storm! Great stuff, got only about 40 frames that night and packed it all up right on time. Not early enough though as we ran home right through heavy rain – the result of that can be seen in the last picture ;-).

Well this last year I went over to Scarborough to see my host dad which I spent almost a year with back in 2002/03. Unfortunately that year Kathy had some exams and couldn’t come. So we decided this year would be perfect to go both and we did.

We booked a flight via Ryanair in May – doesn’t sound strange but it got strange as until the very last moment it wasn’t clear at all wether the flight will actually go or being cancelled because of islands ash cloud. Anyway – we got lucky.

Here are some impressions from Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay – enjoy!

Who fancies hot girls on bikes? ;-) This was actually quite fun shooting – not just the shooting part but I got the honor to be a passenger on this gorgeous bike both ways. But going back to the pictures – we first intended to shoot on an abandoned airstrip or something like that but only found some for model planes which had been in use this very evening. From quite far away riding on that motorbike I saw these windmills and decided to have a try there – as it turned out it was the right call – I quite like the pictures.

This again was shot using strobist technique. (1 SB bare bottom-left, 1 SB shot in reflective umbrella from top-right)

Now in the last two pictures the wind comes in. We achieved this effect using a fuel powered like reverse vacuumer for removing leaves from sidewalks. This was quite fun as when the machine ran you could not understand a word and it was quite hard to give directions to the model at that time.

The photo shoot this evening was quite short notice – Kathy and I where visiting friends (her sister + boyfriend) and where about to be alone for the evening as they where invited for dinner at his moms place. So short handed we decided to not sit and watch tv all night but to get going and take some fabulous pictures and basically that’s what we did.

Location was Laubach Castle, Germany. The first two + the last pictures where taken using strobist technique.

Strobist info: 2 SB’s from top right and bottom left, top one shot in reflective umbrella, bottom one bare – can’t remember the power settings. But they fitted in quite nicely with the ambient light of the setting sun that evening.

One weekend in 2009 we wanted to give this wonderful location another try. The year before we visited with Ariane, Kathy’s sister. Anyways – it’s a lovely old ruin of a watermill beside a small road just into the woods. Nobody’s bothering you here – promise!

I went with Kathy and her mom as an assistant – this was the first time I tried to use flashlights to light my subject and it got me really into it.

Domjüch used to be a nerve clinic from the late 1890s up until 2nd world war. After this the russians used the area for military purposes. Today it’s like a ghost town sadly though as the buildings used to be quite nice looking. Now it’s just ruins standing there waiting for nature to grow over them again.

By the way – this nice terrace in the following picture isn’t anymore. Sadly it has been kicked apart by angry youths and got graffiti painted all over the place. Well – we got a picture before that, havn’t we? ;)
